5 Ways to Stay Healthy This Flu Season

Flu season is here, and with our busy lives, the last thing we need is to be stuck in bed feeling miserable. The good news? There are simple, effective ways to boost your immune system and stay ahead of seasonal sickness. At GET Fit, we believe that small, consistent habits can make all the difference in your health.

Here are five powerful ways to keep your body strong and resilient this flu season:

1️⃣ Start Your Day with Lemon Water 🍋

Hydration is key, and starting your morning with 16 ounces of lemon water helps flush out toxins, cleanse pathogens, and give your immune system a natural boost. Lemon is high in vitamin C and acts as a powerful antioxidant that helps boost immune function Plus, it’s a refreshing way to wake up your body!

2️⃣ Get Your Vitamin D ☀️

Shorter days and colder temperatures mean less sunshine, but Vitamin D is essential for immune function and mental well-being. Try to get outside for at least 20 minutes daily, especially when the sun is shining. And if you’re not getting enough naturally, a high-quality supplement can help. Be sure to get your levels checked before supplementing as vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and although we are all often low in New England, there is still such thing as too much through supplementation.

3️⃣ Prioritize Rest 😴

We often underestimate the power of quality sleep. Your body repairs and strengthens itself while you sleep, making 7-9 hours per night a crucial part of your defense against illness. Turn off screens early, create a relaxing bedtime routine, and give your body the recovery time it needs. If your work-life schedule doesn’t always allow for it, (mom of a 7 month old who refuses to sleep over here), then make sure you squeeze in a few 20 minutes of rest throughput the day. Never underestimate the power behind a good power nap!

4️⃣ Eat More Veggies 🥦🥕

Veggies are packed with immune-boosting nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Aim for a variety of colorful vegetables on your plate daily to give your body the best chance at fighting off germs. The more, the better! Each color of the rainbow offers a different phytochemical and compound to boost your immune system! For example, orange veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, and butternut squash all have beta-carotene in them which helps boost immune function and protects against cell damage. Green veggies like broccoli, kale, and brussel sprouts all have chlorophyll in them. Chlorophyll helps rid the body of toxins as well as it’s high-fiber content. Fiber helps rid the gut of junk and keeps it healthy and if you need to know anything about the gut — it’s that your immune system all starts in your gut!

5️⃣ Drink Your Damn Water! 💦

Yes, it’s cold outside. Yes, you still need water. Hydration is non-negotiable! Drinking at least 80 ounces of water a day helps flush out toxins, keeps your system running smoothly, and supports your body’s natural ability to fight off illness. So, grab that water bottle and start sipping!
